Do Unwanted Thoughts Tug at You, No Matter What You Do?
Do you find yourself consumed by unwanted thoughts or images, concerned about contamination, or worrying about things being out of order? Are you repeatedly checking locks, washing your hands, or asking people for reassurance about things?
Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) can show up in many different ways, but no matter what you struggle with, you’re not the only one. Even when you feel alone, somebody knows what you’re going through— and there are people who want to help.

How a Psychologist May be Able to Help
Have a Question?
What is OCD?
OCD, or Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder, is a mental health challenge where you may get unwanted, persistent thoughts (obsessions) and do things (compulsions) in an effort to feel better. In many cases, you may know that the compulsions your mind ‘tells’ you to do don’t actually have any impact on anything, but it’s like a niggling itch that you feel you have to scratch.
Can OCD symptoms change over time?
Yes, they can. OCD tends to latch onto what you think about the most, and over time this can change. For example, if you’re concerned with hygiene you may develop an obsession with contamination, while if you’re highly religious you may get intrusive blasphemous thoughts.
Stress, life changes, and other factors play roles in how severe your symptoms are and what your OCD centres around. Whatever your obsession or obsessions may be, a psychologist aims to help you manage those thoughts and any compulsions that may go with them.
How will I know if I have OCD?
It may be difficult for you to tell whether you have OCD, as experiencing stress and worry that may develop into intrusive thoughts isn’t uncommon. However, it’s the severity and impact of these thoughts that determine whether or not you have OCD. If you’re constantly dealing with intrusive thoughts that disturb you and you find it hard to resist doing compulsions, you may have OCD. At Mind to Mind, our psychologists are well-trained in recognising OCD and assisting with personalised treatment plans.
