Looking to Start Making Sense of the Patterns in Your Life?
Every day, our life experiences, memories, and relationships slowly shape us. Over time, these experiences can form beliefs about ourselves and the world that may impact how we act. While sometimes this leads to positive changes, we may also form negative beliefs that we want to challenge and change.
At Mind to Mind Psychology, we use schema therapy to work with these deep-rooted patterns. However life has shaped you, we want to help you understand where these beliefs came from and find constructive ways to move forward.

Could Schema Therapy Be Right for You?
When you’re stressed or overwhelmed, you may fall back on deep-seated beliefs, or “schemas”. These can shape patterns of behaviour and coping strategies that, over time, hold you back.
Schema therapy is designed to help you understand how these beliefs connect to childhood experiences. It’s commonly used to address a range of conditions in patients, including:
- Borderline Personality Disorder
- Mood disorders such as depression
- Anxiety disorders
- Post Traumatic Stress Disorder
- Eating disorders such as bulimia nervosa
- Relationship difficulties

A Closer Look at Schema Therapy Techniques
Schema therapy is a type of cognitive behaviour therapy that uses experiential techniques designed to help enhance therapy. The aim is to help people engage with and overcome long-term difficulties that have been holding them back.
Schema therapy uses several techniques, such as:
Schema Identification
Recognising the core beliefs and thought patterns shaping your experience.
Cognitive and Emotional Techniques
Exploring and challenging those schemas from different perspectives.
Limited Reparenting
Emotional support, guidance, and validation to potentially help you build healthier coping strategies.
Mode Work
Understanding the different emotional states or ‘modes’ you move between, and learning to manage them.
Behavioural Techniques
Helping to challenge negative behaviours and develop healthier ones.
Relational Focus
Learning how your schemas affect your relationships and interpersonal patterns.
Integration
Carrying these insights and skills into everyday life.

Answering Your Schema Therapy Questions
What's the difference between a schema and a mood or emotion?
A schema is a deeply held belief or pattern, something like ‘I am unlovable’ or ‘the world is unsafe’, that developed over time, often in response to distress experienced earlier in life. In popular psychology, they have also been called ‘lifetraps’.
Moods and emotions shift day to day. On the other hand, schemas tend to be much more stable and persistent, which is why they often need a more targeted approach to change.
Is schema therapy a short-term or long-term treatment?
Unlike some therapies, schema therapy is typically a longer-term treatment. This is because it works with deeply ingrained patterns that have often developed over many years. The length of treatment will depend on your individual needs and goals.
Will I have to talk about my childhood?
Not necessarily in the way you might expect. Schema therapy explores earlier life experiences, but the focus is always on understanding how the past shows up in the present, not reliving it for its own sake. The only reason we focus on your past is to make your present, and future, better. Your psychologist will move at a pace that feels manageable for you.
Can schema therapy treat obsessive-compulsive disorder or panic disorder?
Schema therapy may be a useful approach for a range of mental health conditions, if underlying schemas may be getting in the way of flourishing, which could include obsessive-compulsive disorder and panic disorder. Many people try schema therapy if another therapy hasn’t been successful, as it can help work through patterns that might be ‘deeply rooted’. Your psychologist will assess whether it may be appropriate for your specific situation or whether another evidence-based approach may be a better fit.
Can schema therapy treat suicidal thoughts or feelings?
Schema therapy may play a role in suicide prevention by addressing the deep-rooted beliefs about self-worth and hopelessness that may be contributing to suicidal thoughts or feelings.
However, this would always be assessed carefully by your psychologist, who will check that the right level of support is in place for your individual needs. Active safety planning is also an important part of managing any suicidal thoughts, as well as reaching out to crisis supports as needed.
Schema therapy, CBT, and DBT: What's the difference?
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) focuses on changing unhelpful thoughts and behaviours in the present. Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) emphasises practical skills for managing overwhelming emotions.
Schema therapy aims to go deeper, exploring how beliefs formed earlier in life, often through unmet emotional needs, are driving your current patterns. It incorporates more experiential and emotion-focused techniques in the therapy room, aiming to create significant shifts in how people feel.
