How a Psychologist May be Able to Help
A psychologist aims to provide essential support in managing trauma and PTSD by assisting you to develop coping strategies, process traumatic memories, and address distressing symptoms. While your traumatic experience is unique to you, and will be treated as such, there are many evidence-based therapies that psychologists may use to help you reclaim your sense of peace and control.
Have a Question?
Are PTSD and trauma the same thing?
While they’re often associated with each other, trauma and PTSD are separate challenges. Trauma is a response to a distressing event, and may lead to physical or emotional reactions (or both). PTSD is short for Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, which may develop after experiencing trauma and often includes distressing and intrusive memories of the trauma. Not everybody who experienced trauma will develop PTSD.
How will I know if I have PTSD?
While PTSD may stem from trauma, it has unique symptoms that differentiate it from trauma. These include unwanted memories, nightmares, avoiding reminders of the trauma (such as people, places, and objects), and a heightened sense of fear and hypervigilence for over a month. You may also struggle to remember details of the event, lose interest in what you once loved to do, and feel overly negative thoughts about yourself or the world.
What can cause trauma and PTSD?
Any event or situation that you find difficult to overcome may cause trauma and possibly lead to PTSD. Often these are associated with first responders such as paramedics and police officers, but trauma has the potential to affect anybody.
What some people find traumatic may not be traumatic for others. Because of this, there are no specific events that cause or exclude trauma and PTSD. Some traumatic events include:
- Accidents, for example, a car accident
- Illness or death
- Domestic violence
- Emotional or psychological abuse
- Physical abuse
- Sexual abuse
- Exposure to war or conflict
- Natural disasters
