How a Psychologist May be Able to Help

Have a Question?
While depression and low mood are commonly thought of as the same thing, they are two separate conditions. Having a low mood is often part of depression, but not always. The main differences include:
- Depression — Lasts for more than two weeks, and may include symptoms like sleep problems, a lack of interest in your favourite activities, changes in your appetite, and feelings of guilt and worthlessness. It may also impair your daily functioning, making it difficult to get out of bed or perform your best at work.
- Low mood — Typically lasts for a few days to weeks, during or after a particular stressor, and generally doesn’t affect daily functioning. Although it may be seen as less severe than depression, if you’re experiencing low moods, you deserve mental health support.
Depression has the ability to affect anybody, and it’s important to know that you’re not alone. Many studies have been conducted on the rates of depression, with a 2020-2022 study showing that approximately 8% of Australians were diagnosed with an affective disorder (such as depression) in the 12 months before the study.
